Drop-off and First Night
Alone. The North Pole next.
Camp 1: After a few hours at Barneo the chopper was ready for them. These Russian helicopters look worryingly like bees. And the first thought that stuck you is ‘Can that fly????’
But bees do fly. And these certainly do. There is no machine more adapted to these harsh conditions. After all, there is no one close to the Russians when it comes to Arctic knowledge and experience.
Thus, they had a beautiful flight out. And even saw a polar bear from the helicopter halfway between the Pole and their camp! – What a bonus.
Then, suddenly they were left alone engulfed in a silence that was ringing in their ears. It is a magic moment and you feel this wonderful mix of fright, joy, suspense and of being endlessly privileged.
After a few kilometres to get the feel they camped as the day had been quite long and eventful. Andrea and Sine in one tent, Anastasia alone in her and the boys in the main tent. We believe everybody slept very well, and this morning the drift had take then 4 km closer to the North Pole! That is a real Polar Dream!
They woke up at: N88°03,280 E163°16’ if you like to play with Google Earth.
