11th of May
Yesterday the team drove up towards the icecap and started the expedition as planned. Bengt called in this morning and said conditions were good. No water, and the icefall looked the same as last year so in other words no major changes and they can follow the intended route. They did a bit of skiing last night, just to get going, and camped on the ice after a couple of km.
Conditions are always tricky at the start, it’s a bit icy, he says, but they try to ski wherever there is snow. All have crampons, but it’s easier to strain an ankle or stumble with crampons on, so they prefer skiing. They will for sure pick up speed as they advance towards the plateau.
