Expedition details

the route

The ski trip to & from Newtontoppen is approx 160km. We will take a snowmobile from Longyearbyen all the way to the east coast of Spitsbergen. We will be dropped of at Mohn-bukta close to an impressive glacier front. Here we are in the heart of Polar Bear territory so the watch for this amazing creatures starts immediately. From here we are turning our skis to the northwest and we work ourselves up the Hayes glacier and in to the vast glacial plateau of Spitsbergen. Reaching Newtontoppen we turn around and head down towards Nordenskiöld Glacier, where we descend into Adolfbukta. Here we will be picked up with snowmobiles and transported back to Longyearbyen.

Day by day

Day 1: We have arrived at Longyearbyen the same day, (or the previous days if you like) and use the rest of this day to pack provisions, personal stuff, prepare the sledges and double check equipment. Any missing parts can be bought in the local sports store.
We also go through the route, plans, predicted weather and teach how the team is setting up communication, navigation and safety.

Day 2: ‘An early rise is the first commandment for the one who want to reach the top’, said the poet Kristofer Randers. We follow the same mentality. We will be driven to Mohn-bukta, the starting point, by snowmobile. A beautiful ride through some of the biggest valleys on Spitsbergen. Well on the east-coast we will move away from the sea-ice and set up camp. Polar Bear watch is on!

Day 3-4: We make our way up the Hayes Glacier and aim for the mountains in the distance that rise above the ice

Day 4-6: After the mountain range is behind us we step on the the mighty Lomonosovfonna, a great glacial plateau before a new mountain range is visible in the distance.

Day 7/8: We reach Atomfjella, a mountain range packed with stunning Nunataks. It is also within these mountains that Newtontoppen lies.

Day 9-(10)-11: Summit! On top of the roof of Spitsbergen, 1712 masl. Where ever you look you see endless mountain ranges and glaciers spread between them.

Day (11)-12: We head back towards Lomonosovfonna, but we shift our direction slighlty to the west and start descending towards Billefjord.

Day 13-15: We ski down the Nordenskiöld Glacier and make our way all the way down to the coast. Here we will be picked up by snowmobiles and head back into Longyearbyen.
